New Releases from SEAWOLF Wines
Tom Lee / August 9, 2024

SEAWOLF Wines is a partnership between two winemakers dedicated to natural winemaking and hands-on organic farming. Living life in the vineyard and on the sea has spawned SEAWOLF Wines. Founded by Jesse Hall and Emma Kudritzki Hall in 2014 the winery is located at the top of Anderson Valley in the Yorkville Highlands. At their organic dry farmed Estate vineyard in Yorkville, they grow Sauvignon Blanc, Grenache, Mourvedre, Petite Sirah, Primitivo, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Zinfandel.

I had a chance to visit SEAWOLF this last week on a trip to the Anderson Valley. The winery is situated at 2200 feet in the Yorkville Highlands and the views are absolutely breathtaking. While at the winery Jesse poured us the 2023 Rose, 2022 Carbonic Zinfandel, 2023 Pinot Noir Lost Coast and 2021 Zinfandel Red Triangle. The Rose and Carbonic Zinfandel are both delicious, refreshing and made in a lighter style that works so well this time of the year. The Pinot Noir and Zinfandel were stunning. All of these wines are available now on the SEAWOLF website and are highly recommended. Jesse also sent me home with some samples that will be released in late August.

2022 SEAWOLF Estate Yorkville Highlands Primitivo First Crush – Purple in color. 14.3% ABV. Savory nose of red and black fruits, plums and pepper. Medium body with ample acidity. Lush and fruit forward. Black cherry, blackberry, nectarine and pepper on the palate. The finish is long and spicy. Appealing wine that will fare well with hearty foods. Best over the next 2-3 years. $58 at the winery and retail. My rating: 92 points.

2022 SEAWOLF Estate Yorkville Highlands Grenache Three Graces – Ruby red in color. 13.5% ABV. Pretty nose of red fruits, kirsch, wet asphalt and flowers. Light to medium body with perfect acidity. Soft, supple and approachable. Cherry, cranberry, strawberry and roasted herbs on the palate. Nice length on the finish. Delicious wine made with a sense of elegance and restraint. Best over the next 3-5 years. $58 at the winery and retail. My rating: 93 points.

2021 SEAWOLF Estate Yorkville Highlands Cabernet Sauvignon – Purple in color. 14.1% ABV. The nose features red and black fruits, wet leaves, plums and cedar. Full bodied with notable power and concentration. Currants, cassis, tobacco leaves and graphite on the palate. Tremendous length on the finish with prominent, silky tannins. My first Cabernet Sauvignon from the Yorkville Highlands and the wine did not disappoint. Best over the next 6-8 years. $64 at the winery and retail. My rating: 94 points.

SEAWOLF Wines is on Highway 128 in the Yorkville Highlands. The winery is open for tastings by appointment. I look forward to following the winery in the years to come.

Thank you Press Democrat for selecting our 2022 SEAWOLF Fennel and Stone Sauvignon Blanc from our organic vineyard in Yorkville Highlands Mendocino as one of the 100 amazing wines from California to try now according to experts.

2022 Seawolf, Fennel and Stone Sauvignon Blanc, Yorkville Highlands ($36): I have to include Seawolf Wines’ 2022 Fennel and Stone Sauvignon Blanc in our list of top wines, even though it’s sold out at the winery (the 2023 vintage will be released in February). IT WAS ONE OF THE MOST REMARKABLE WINES I TASTED IN 2023, AND ONE OF THE BEST SAUVIGNON BLANCS I’VE EVER HAD. Set a reminder to purchase a bottle of this popular Yorkville Highlands gem that has loads of exotic white flowers, passion fruit and lime zest, with a glossy texture and racy finish. Summer 2023

Wine Enthusiast Summer 2023 awarded our 2022 carbonic Zinfandel as a Hidden Gem. The new “Hidden Gem” class was launched in fall 2022. It highlights regional standouts and offers readers a list of bottles to be discovered. When a wine provides a Wine Enthusiast editor with a surprise-and-delight moment, it is deemed a “Hidden Gem.” This list serves as a guide for consumers to experience and taste a collection of special discoveries.

Wine Enthusiast Summer 2023: Incorporating 100% whole-cluster carbonic fermentation, this Zinfandel—which has just 1.7% of Colombard and 0.3% Muscat in the mix—is not your stereotypical expression. It’s bursting with red fruits: cherry, plum, raspberry—all with a candy-like quality. Fans of the nouveau style should definitely give this a go.-Stacy Briscoe

US new releases spring 2023 Jancis Robinson

Thank you Samantha Cole-Johnson from Jancis Robinson for the high-score highlights to Seawolf Wines in Yorkville Highlands, California, for our top-notch, well-balanced, expressive Zinfandel’s and Primitivo (the labelling difference based on clonal material);

Sam clears her desk before taking a month off to attend to her MW exam – and finds plenty to recommend before she goes. Left, Jesse Hall and Emma Kudritzki Hall at Seawolf Wines in Yorkville Highlands, California.

Bottle weights are included on all Jancis Robinson wine reviews. Seawolf is staying green by using light weight bottles and helping to reduce our carbon foot print.

Seawolf, Dogali’s Nouveau Zinfandel 2022 Redwood Valley
Full bottle 1,396 g. Organic. Dry-farmed. 100% whole-cluster carbonic, native fermentation co-fermented with French Colombard and Muscat. Aged 2.5 months sur lie in stainless-steel barrels. Unfined, unfiltered, vegan.
Pale, slightly cloudy purple. Oh yes, they have done it – it smells like Nouveau! (SCJ)
11.1% Drink 2023

2024 $42 RRP 16

Seawolf, Venturi Vineyard Zinfandel 2021 Mendocino
Full bottle 1,401 g. Dry-farmed organic 75-year-old vineyard. Native-yeast fermentation. Aged 11 months sur lie in one-year-old French Redmond barrels. Unfined, unfiltered.
Medium purple in colour. It smells like warm, dried pine needles and blackberries baked on the vine. Brambles and wild violets pressed between pages of parchment. The acid is tart and the tannin is sinewy with some chew. A lovely bite of dried orange rind on the finish. Stunning wine. (SCJ)
14.6% Drink 2023

2036 $56 RRP 17

Seawolf, First Crush Primitivo 2021 Yorkville Highlands
Full bottle 1,394 g. Estate fruit grown at 2,000 ft elevation in Yorkville Highlands. Organic. Dry-farmed. Native-yeast fermentation of Primitivo co-fermented with Petite Sirah. Aged for 11 months sur lie in 35% new François Frères oak. Unfined, unfiltered.
Medium purple in colour. Vanilla-bean and blackberry-jam nose – blackberries were picked fresh and tart with lots of acid. Tannin is nearing high and is rounded and velvety. High fresh acid. Long finish unrolling with chocolate and liquorice notes. I think this is more a traditional ‘Zinfandel’ with the oak character than the Venturi Vineyards Zinfandel was. I prefer the freshness of the Venturi but this is excellent if you want a bit more oak. (SCJ)
14.6% Drink 2023

2036 $58 RRP 17

Seawolf, Three Graces Grenache 2021 Yorkville Highlands
Estate-grown Grenache at 2,000 ft elevation. Organic. Dry-farmed. Native-yeast fermentation with 50% whole cluster. Aged 11 months sur lie in 30% new French oak. Unfined, unfiltered.

Best Anderson Valley Vineyards To Enjoy During Crush Season

SEAWOLF Wines is the first winery open to the public that you’ll encounter when entering Anderson Valley from the south. This micro-batch winery makes small amounts of marvelous Zinfandels and other varietals. A husband and wife team makes two barrels or less of each varietal and blends from their organic dry-farmed vineyard.
Make this your first stop when you enter the valley. The vineyard has a spectacular vista across the tops of the California Coastal Range. Several comfy outside tasting areas are designed to take in the view. Also, check the website for music schedules on the stage overlooking AV’s outstanding scenery.

WINE ENTHUSIAST, JIM GORDON

2020 SEAWOLF Lady of the Lake Vineyard Zinfandel, 94 points

Concentrated, jammy blackberry and black fig aromas and flavors are especially vivid in this full-bodied, deep and captivating wine. It shows good depth and layering as well as a creamy yet mildly tannic texture that maintains its freshness and charm.
