A Day Trip from Healdsburg to SEAWOLF Wines
If you're staying in Healdsburg for a few days, it's worth getting out of town for an afternoon.
One of our favorite drives starts in Healdsburg and heads northwest on Highway 128 toward the Yorkville Highlands. About 35 minutes later, you'll find yourself on the ridge at SEAWOLF Wines, looking out over the Anderson and Alexander Valleys.
The landscape changes pretty quickly as you leave Healdsburg. The roads wind through vineyards and redwoods, the air gets cooler, and before long you're climbing toward our little piece of wine country.
We're the first winery you'll come across as you enter Anderson Valley from the Sonoma County side.
It's a pretty good place to slow down for a while.
From Healdsburg to the Yorkville Highlands
The drive from Healdsburg to SEAWOLF is part of what makes the visit special.
Highway 128 takes you away from the busier parts of Sonoma County and into the Yorkville Highlands. Our vineyard sits around 2,000 feet above sea level, so the weather and landscape feel noticeably different from what you experience down in the valley.
On a clear day, you can see across the surrounding hills and valleys from the tasting area. On foggy days, the atmosphere is completely different.
We like both.
If you're not in a hurry, give yourself some time to enjoy the drive rather than treating it simply as a way to get from one tasting room to another.
What Is a Visit to SEAWOLF Like?
SEAWOLF is a small, family-run winery, and that's reflected in the way we host people.
Jesse and Emma are the winemakers, and we personally host the tastings. So when you have a question about a wine, the vineyard, farming, or how something was made, you're talking to the people who actually did the work.
Our tasting experience takes place outdoors, overlooking the vineyard and the surrounding landscape.
You'll have the opportunity to taste our current-release wines and learn a little about where they come from. We don't expect you to be a wine expert, either. If you're curious about something, ask.
That's usually where the best conversations start.
Why Add SEAWOLF to a Healdsburg Wine Trip?
Healdsburg has plenty to offer without leaving town, but sometimes it's nice to spend part of the day somewhere quieter.
At SEAWOLF, the vineyard is right in front of you. Our estate is organically farmed and dry-farmed, and our wines are made in small quantities using a low-intervention approach.
We use native yeast fermentation and minimal additions, and our wines are bottled unfined and unfiltered when appropriate.
For us, that approach starts with the vineyard.
We want to work with the site rather than trying to make everything taste exactly the same from one year to the next.
Organic and Dry-Farmed Wine in the Yorkville Highlands
Our estate vineyard is organically farmed and dry-farmed, which means we don't irrigate the vines. They rely on natural rainfall and the moisture held in the soil.
The elevation is another important part of the site.
Warm days, cool nights, mountain conditions, and the influence of the Pacific all affect how the grapes grow. Those differences are part of what makes the Yorkville Highlands interesting for wine.
You can read about farming practices all day, but it's much easier to understand when you're sitting above the vineyard with a glass of wine in your hand.
How Long Should You Plan for a Visit?
We generally recommend allowing about an hour and a half for the tasting experience.
That gives you enough time to settle in, taste the wines, talk with us, and actually enjoy the setting instead of watching the clock.
If you're making a larger day trip out of it, give yourself more time.
You may want to continue into Anderson Valley after your visit, stop somewhere along Highway 128, or simply take the long way back toward Healdsburg.
There is no need to turn the day into a race between tasting appointments.
A Good Starting Point for Exploring Anderson Valley
Because we're right at the entrance to Anderson Valley, SEAWOLF can work well as either the first stop or one of the stops on a larger wine-country day.
Start in Healdsburg in the morning, head up Highway 128, and spend some time at SEAWOLF before continuing into Anderson Valley.
Or come up for a later tasting and make your way back toward Healdsburg afterward.
If you're interested in exploring further, there are plenty of places to see along the way, from vineyards and redwoods to the smaller communities farther into the valley.
The nice thing about this part of Northern California is that you don't have to plan every minute.
Bring the Kids. Bring the Dog.
Wine tasting doesn't always make for the easiest family outing, but we try to keep things relaxed at SEAWOLF.
Kids are welcome, and we're a dog-friendly winery too.
Our tasting area is outdoors, so there's room to enjoy the surroundings rather than spending the entire visit inside.
If your dog has been sitting in the car while you've visited wineries all day, this is a good place to change that.
When Is the Best Time to Visit SEAWOLF?
We're open daily from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., and reservations are recommended.
Morning visits can be especially nice if you're hoping for clearer views across the valleys. The weather can change quickly at our elevation, though, and that's part of the character of the place.
If you're visiting from Healdsburg during a warmer part of the year, remember that the ridge can feel cooler than the valley. Bringing a light layer is never a bad idea.
And if you plan on spending more time in Anderson Valley afterward, leave yourself some room in the schedule.
